MY PROGRAM OF RESEARCH IS FOCUSED on clinical work with couples and families in oncology and psychosocial oncology. I am studying interventions and outcomes in family systems nursing, family nursing, and couple/family therapy. I am interested in the reciprocal relationship between beliefs and illness experience, sexuality/intimacy for couples living with cancer and family/health care provider relationships. I am also studying education outcomes in web-based, interprofessional psychosocial oncology education. Methodologies include qualitative and interpretive approaches such as philosophical hermeneutics, hermeneutic phenomenology, and narrative inquiry

Educational Background

B.N., M.N.  Dalhousie University

Ph.D., University of Calgary

Current Professional and Educational Responsibilities

I hold a position as a clinician scientist with the Capital Health Cancer Care Program. In that position, clinically I provide clinical care (individual, couple/family and group psychotherapy) as a member of the psychosocial oncology team.

I am the national project lead for the Interprofessional Psychosocial Oncology Distance Education (IPODE) project (www.ipode.ca). I teach within that project and provide overall course coordination across partner universities for 2 courses: NURS5895 Interprofessional Psychosocial Oncology: Introduction to Theory and Practice (Winter) and NURS5897 Relational Practices with Families in Oncology and Palliative Care (Fall). A third course, Sexual Counselling in Cancer Populations is currently under development. The IPODE project is an initiative of the Canadian Association of Psychosocial Oncology (CAPO). Course development was funded by Health Canada and the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer.

I also provide graduate student research and clinical supervision.

Nationally, I am a member of the Canadian Association of Psychosocial Oncology Board of Directors (Vice President 2009-2011).
